MAITAKE OVERVIEW

Maitake is one of the most popular medicinal mushrooms in Japan, but has very little recorded use in Traditional Chinese Medicine. All of the scientific research has focused on using Maitake extracts to support immune health.* Our full spectrum Maitake extract delivers all the immune benefits Maitake has to offer. Leaving the Maitake fractions in their naturally occurring mix of beta glucans, minerals and amino acids ensures that all the potential health benefits are provided.* Maitake, like all of the other medicinal mushrooms, must be prepared as a hot water extract in order to be effective for supporting immune health.* Maitake is also a choice edible mushroom and is common in the hardwood forests of the Northeastern United States.

SCIENCE

The scientific name for Maitake is Grifola frondosa.  Maitake polysaccharides contain a unique beta-1,6 1,3 glucan structure.  The research shows that these beta glucans stimulate the macrophages and have the ability to directly enhance the activity of Natural Killer (NK) cells and to change NK precursor cells into activated NK cells.*

MushroomScience sells two different Maitake products, both of which are hot water extracts, the Maitake Full Spectrum capsules and the MaitakeGold 404 as a one ounce liquid supplement preserved in glycerin.

The question often is asked, is one better than the other?

Does the standardized version, Maitake Gold 404, offer any advantages over the MushroomScience Full Spectrum Maitake extract in capsules?

All of the components found in the MaitakeGold 404 and the other Maitake Fraction are also contained in the full spectrum Maitake extract.  The research also demonstrates that MaitakeGold 404 and the full spectrum Maitake extracts have the same health benefits, the same value for immune support.*

In short, the fractioning process used to produce MaitakeGold 404 does not add or detract from the inherent bioactivity or immune benefits offered by the Maitake.*

TRADITION

There are no references for Maitake in the Chinese herbal tradition.  However Japanese herbalists have long used Maitake tea as an adaptogen to help balance the various systems and functions of the body in times of stress.* Most importantly, the Maitake polysaccharides have been found to balance and stimulate the immune system, the bodies’ internal defense system against external invaders.
